In 2017 when I was setting up Nimbus, I was doing research on advice from successful creative consultants on subjects like negotiation, structuring projects, deliverable acceptance, and (most relevant to this post) contracts. One of the things I found was a talk titled Fuck You, Pay Me by Mike Monteiro, co-founder of Mule Design, given as part of the Creative Mornings series.
Despite what the provocative and funny title might imply, the talk is full of useful advice for getting paid while preserving good relationships with clients. Chief among the lessons I learned from it is that a good lawyer is more than worth their fee.
I still revisit this talk every couple of years, and pass on the link any time any creative ever laments the cost of a lawyer anywhere within earshot.
